Located at the gateway to the golden desert of Thar, the Blue City - Jodhpur is the jewel of the big city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Jodhpur festivals are the rich mix of its cultural heritage and rich traditions. Although various festivals are deliberately held in Jodhpur, the most famous festivals in Jodhpur are:
Marwar
Festival: The Marwar Festival is the most popular and almost second largest
festival in India, celebrated in memory of the medieval heroes of Rajasthan for
their brave deeds. This great festival is celebrated for two days in the Hindu
month of Ashwin (September-October) during the time of Sharad Purnima. The
large male fort Meharangarh and the breathtaking Umaid Bhawan offer the perfect
location for the celebration. The festival is entirely dedicated to the music
and dance of the Marwar region.
The
musicians play and compose various songs (maand) that are reminiscent of these
brave heroes of the country of Rajputana. The fair includes many other
attractions, such as horse riding, horse polo. These events also give viewers
the opportunity to take part in these adventure games. The Marwar Festival is
without a doubt the amalgamation of music, art, dance and entertainment.
Jodhpur
International Desert Kite Festival: Although the Jodhpur International Desert
Kite Festival only started a few years ago, it has grown into one of the most
anticipated and grandiose festivals in Jodhpur. Its official date is January
14th, which lasts three days. The festival takes place at the Jodhpur Polo Ground,
where the best hang gliders from around the world show off their hang gliding
skills. The whole sky is colored with kites of various designs and shapes.
There comes a time for more adventure when the kite falls and people scream
with excitement.
Air force
helicopters also let a large number of kites take off from above and numerous
small children launch balloons.
Nagaur
Fair: Jodhpur Nagaur Fair is the second largest fair in India and lasts eight
days. This fair takes place in January-February. The Nagaur Fair deals mainly
with the trade in animals, which is why it is also known as the "Cattle
Fair". Around 70,000 oxen, camels, sheep and horses are traded at the fair
every year.
Other
highlights of the fair are the pet trade Red Chilly Bazar (the largest cold red
market in India), ironwork, wood goods, camel leather goods, etc. The puppet
shows, jugglers and storytellers entertain the visitors a lot.
At the
fair you can also enjoy some very exciting sports such as tug of war, camel
racing, ox racing, cockfighting. Popular music, crowned by the city's rich
